LANGUAGE PROGRAM

We are the only camp in Canada which offers children of both language groups the opportunity to live together in equal numbers.

Since 1976 we have been offering a structured bilingual program with the express purpose of bringing English-speaking and French-speaking children together to share the warmth and excitement of a traditional summer camp experience.
We have found that when children play, live, and share the magic of being in the out-of-doors together, the typical boundaries which often hinder language learning melt away very quickly!

Camp Ouareau provides a unique opportunity for English and French children to dispel the myth of "the two solitudes". We are not an immersion program, but an English camp with a structured language program.
At Ouareau, our campers are equally a part of both English and French worlds, they are never alone in their learning!

We have 128 campers - 50% English speaking, 50% French speaking. ALL children who come to Ouareau are part of the language program. If you decide to register, please discuss this with your daughter so that she will know what to expect.

It is important for parents to make sure their daughter knows that learning another language is not easy and can have its frustrating moments. All of our staff are specially trained and sensitive to the challenges which can arise in this situation.

We send our future campers a small dictionary of words and expressions that are useful for camp life. If your daughter can memorize even a few phrases it will add to her confidence, and give her a good head start!

Every year we have a number of bilingual campers join us for the summer. They contribute an irreplaceable element of peer support and encouragement for our other campers. They help both language groups learn and have fun!
Our staff guides them in learning how to do this effectively.
