Camp Ouareau Staff Information

The Job:

ALL STAFF are in charge of a cabin group of 4 or 6 children between the ages of 8 and 15 for a period of two or four weeks. A counselor is responsible for:

- her campers' well being and security

- her campers' day to day routine

- learning her campers' likes and dislikes; hopes, dreams and goals

- providing reliable, consistent support and consideration for her campers' individual needs.

Working at camp is not a "nine to five" job.The children are up at 7:30am and the oldest are in bed around 9:30pm, with lights out around 10:00pm. This is your day too!

You will not have a great deal of time "to do your own thing" at camp- You will, however, have a wonderful time making new friends, living in the out-of doors, and feeling the great satisfaction of making a campers life better. The demands of working at camp can be great, but the rewards are greater! Working at a summer camp is an experience that you'll remember forever.

Activity heads:
are responsible for the organization and supervision of their activity, as well as the health and safety of all participants and staff. The activity head needs to be able to teach her activity at our highest skill level, and she must possess the leadership qualities required to assess and manage potential risk. We have solid records and guidelines from past heads of activities, and she will have every opportunity to add her own input to the program. Each activity head has an assistant and qualified staff.

Resource Staff:
work primarily in one or two activities - She is placed by the program director, according to an assessment of her skills and interests.

Program Staff:
All staff are program staff. Everyone takes part in helping to plan evening programs for the full camp or within the unit. The general themes are organized by the program director and unit heads who then ask for volunteers to work out the details.

General Duties:
All staff take turns with night duty, rest hour and shower duty. The schedule is carefully worked out on a weighted point system, and is fair to everyone. All staff eat at tables with campers and monitor eating habits, table manners and conversation.

Tripping:
Everyone who is qualified has the opportunity to either lead or assist on a trip. Staff leaders must be 19 years old or over and must have full first aid and swimming qualifications. By law, 17 year olds must be counted as campers, and thus only go on trips if the ratio with two older staff members works out. Each cabin group has at least one overnight with their counselor in the camp area.
