SEARCH HINTS !
# 1 CERTIFICATE OF LIVE BIRTH
is filled out in Ont. as a preface to getting a birth certificate. It can be done by the parent, Dr., etc. It usually has all the pertinent info like DOB, time, place, weight, etc. You can get a copy by going IN PERSON to the Registrars office at Bay and Wellesly and just requesting it. You have to pay a small fee, and they send it to you within a short time. They supposedly don't ask questions, but you need your date and place of birth. (Thanks friend on CANADopt!)
# 2 CERTIFIED COPY OF BIRTH CERTIFICATE
DOB, time, place etc. It's a green form, and it costs $22.00 from your registry office. In Ottawa, 161 Elgin St. . 4th floor. In Toronto the phone number is 1-800-461-2156 (Pretty busy though.) Also for those parents who don't know, you can not get any kind of certificate from them if your child is over 18. So don't wait too long !!!!!!! You need their permission in writing after that.
# 3 DIVORCE INDICES: Divorce indices have been moved to the Archives of Ontario
(77 Grenville St.). The books are arranged chronological by years and then by the initial
of the surname. Look for the surname in the approximate years and copy down full names and
file number. Ask the staff to show you how to fill out a request slip to retrieve the file
you want. Retrieval takes 3-5 days. Be sure to tell them you require the books not the reels
with all kinds of judgements.
A NASTY BIT OF HISTORY
The law in Ontario changed in 1970 re birth names.
Some judges started this early in anticipation of the change.
If you were adopted around this time you would no longer have a birth name.
You would only be John D. #4965047. Your adoption papers would have John D. #4965047.
Hence no surname to search with.
All adoptees from 1970 on do not have birth names. Prior to this they did. In effect it is age discrimination.
Age discrimination falls under Human Rights.
